INITIATIVE 872

The Grange and Washington's Primary

The Grange has long been an advocate of good legislation. In 1934, members of the Washington State Grange started the Blanket Primary, with support from labor and the voters of the state of Washington, through an initiative. The blanket primary allows voters to choose any candidate, regardless of political party, at a primary election. The candidates from each party that get the most votes advance to the general election.

Grange leaders like Charlie Hodde and Ira Shea led the initiative drive to start a blanket primary in Washington

I encourage all to join the Grange. You can gain a true grassroots, nonpartisan voice in Olympia, along with many other benefits. Help us defend the rights of people in Washington state, at the ballot box and in our communities.
